Forsberg Earns Platinum at Gold Cup
Auburn’s Andy Forsberg captured his 57th career main event win at Silver Dollar Speedway by leading all 30-laps of the Platinum Cup finale during the Saturday night Gold Cup Race of Champions. Forsberg started in the front row with Wednesday night winner Colby Copeland. Copeland earned the highest points over the two nights and started from the pole position. Behind Forsberg it was an all-out war between Copeland, Cory Day, and Dominic Scelzi. On lap 15 Scelzi passed both Day and Copeland to move into the second spot.
Forsberg survived two late race cautions on lap 17 and lap 25. Scelzi tried everything he could to slide Forsberg for the lead. Yet, we all appreciate that Scelzi went for it, but didn’t force a wreck to win the race. “He raced me like a gentleman,� said Forsberg in victory lane. “I was concerned on those restarts because I knew how great Dominic is and how great he has been this season.�
Copeland came home in the third spot. Day held onto fourth. Justyn Cox continued to be a strong presence at Chico and finished fifth. Kyle Hirst drove up to the sixth spot. Seventh went to Ryan Robinson, who at one point was a top five car. The overall main event was spectacular, and all 24 drivers should be proud that they made the show. The week saw 55 different drivers compete over the four-night format.
Jayson Bright started 15th and finished eighth. What is so impressive about his run this week is that he came out of the Friday night C main event. Other drivers that came out of the Friday night C main and made the Saturday night main event included Stephen Ingraham, finished 13th, Nick Larsen (16th), and Brian McGahan Jr. (17th). Congratulations to those four drivers who need to be recognized for their impressive efforts.
