Wiesz Wins Night One; Jones Captures Gold on Night Two

Chico, CA (Sept 7, 2019) …. Shawn Jones of San Jose won the 20-lap Dwarf Car finale on Saturday night of the 66th Gold Cup Race of Champions. Jones took the lead for good on lap 13. Up to that point the race was led by Shawn Whitney and Ryan Winter. Whitney led until lap eight. Winter took control on nine. On the next lap Winter’s car bicycled going into turn three and almost flipped. Somehow the experienced driver kept it on all four but came to a stop. Whitney moved back into the lead.
Whitney led until lap 12 when Jones charged into the lead and looked to be well on his way to an easy win. But give Whitney credit, he closed on Jones in the final few laps. At the finish line, Jones only beat Whitney by 0.777. Mike Reeder ran third. Tim Fitzpatrick came up to finish fourth. Ben Wiesz charged from deep in the field (17th) to finish fifth.
Winter won the first eight lap heat. Jones grabbed the win in heat two. Brian Quilty showed the way in heat three. Jeremy Blackshere picked up the heat four win. A great turnout of cars (24) entered the Saturday night Gold Cup finale.
Friday night 20 drivers suited up for the first night of the Dwarf Car portion of the Gold Cup. The fans were treated to a great main event. Sixth place starting Ben Wiesz won the 20-lap thriller. Wiesz took the lead from Jeremy Blackshere on lap 11. Mike Grenert led the first four laps. On lap five, Blackshere took over the top spot. Wiesz then took the top spot and never relinquished the lead. Ryan Winter charged into second but on lap 17 spun around in turn one to bring out the yellow. Blackshere was not able to close in on Wiesz and finished second some 1.289 seconds behind. Third went to Brian Quilty. Josh Wiesz came home fourth. In fact, father Colby Wiesz finished tenth, giving the Wiesz family three out of the top ten finishers. Mike Grenert rounded out the top five.
Ryan Winter won the first heat race. Ben Wiesz grabbed the win in heat two. Shawn Whitney won the third and final heat race.
The Dwarf Car Nationals is just two weeks away at the Marysville Raceway. The special two-night race offers an incredible grandstand deal for Friday night September 20th. All grandstand general admission tickets are just $1. The final night, September 21, will be regular pricing for the grandstands. More info at www.marysvilleraceway.com
