Civil War Series opens 60th Gold Cup Race of Champions on Sept 4

Civil War Series opens 60th Gold Cup Race of Champions on Sept 4

CHICO, CA (8-28-13) - Every race that the Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series presents during the year is always spectacular in nature. On coming Wednesday, September 4 that is sure to be the case once again as this series will compete in its annual crown jewel event, the Pacific Sprint Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.

The Pacific Sprint Cup is a special weeknight event for the traveling series for winged sprint cars and opens one of the biggest weeks of racing in Northern California. This event marks the first of four straight nights of racing at the Silver Dollar Speedway for the 60th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions.

Racing before an audience that travels from all parts of the world for this annual fall classic, the Civil War Sprint Car Series will be competing in its 12th event of the 14 race traveling series as it enters its final month of competition. The winged warriors will share the spotlight with the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Car Series for this special Wednesday night event.

Heading into Wednesday's competition, Prunedale's Justin Sanders leads the point standings in the Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series. Sanders redeemed the point lead of the traveling tour on August 10th with his podium finish in the Mark Forni Classic at Placerville Speedway.

Driving the Rudy and Beverly Warrington owned #18 sprint car; Sander's has two advantages in his favor as he looks for his first Pacific Sprint Cup win on Wednesday. The first advantage, Sanders already has a series victory at Silver Dollar Speedway this season when he captured the checkered flag in a wild finish. Secondly, the Warrington #18 team has won this race previously with former driver Greg DeCaires behind the wheel. Another factor in Sander's favor, Chico is one of his favorite tracks and he is always a contender on the dark clay of the north state.

Sitting in second place in the point standings is former two time Civil War Series Champion Sean Becker of Roseville. After being unable to start the A-main in the last Civil War event, Becker slipped to second place and now trails Sanders by 15-points. Silver Dollar Speedway is also a hot bed for Becker who recently won the 2013 track championship and is a previous winner of this race.

Defending seven time Civil War Series Champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn is in third place in the ranks. Forsberg is no stranger to the victory circle at Chico and will carry with him the momentum of winning the recent Tyler Wolf Memorial race just two weeks ago. He is also a former Silver Dollar Speedway track champion and former winner of the Wednesday night showcase event.

Colby Wiesz of Colfax is sure to be a factor for the win as he rounds out the top four in the Civil War point standings. Billy Aton of Benecia is fifth in the order and followed by Sacramento's Herman Klein, Billy Butler of Sacramento, Shane Golobic of Fremont, Matt Peterson of Wilton, Mason Moore of Princeton and Koen Shaw of Fresno.

The gates will open at 5 p.m. with racing starting at 7. For ticket information of additional information on the upcoming Gold Cup Race of Champions, visit www.silverdollarspeedway.com online.

Further information on the Civil War Series can be found at www.civilwarsprints.com. Following Chico, the Civil War Sprint Car Series will head to Petaluma Speedway on September 14th and will conclude the 2013 racing season on Saturday, September 21 at Placerville Speedway.
