Dominic Scelzi Wins Champions Classic at Chico
CHICO, Calif. May 8, 2026 – Fresno’s Dominic Scelzi returned to victory lane at Silver Dollar Speedway for the first time since 2022. Scelzi passed Sean Becker on lap eight to take the lead. From there on out, Scelzi was solid. With the win, Scelzi pocketed the $4,000 payday and earned his sixth career victory at Chico. “It’s so cool that SLC Promotions is bringing 410 sprint car racing back on Friday nights at Silver Dollar,” said Scelzi. “I feel NARC is continuing to get stronger and with 410 racing on the rise, it’s a great thing for the West Coast.”
Second spot went to Sean Becker. A long-time crowd favorite, Becker led the first seven laps. After multiple reds and yellows, Becker felt he lost some of his rhythm early in the race. “Those reds and yellows were tough to start the race, but once we got going, we were fast,” said Becker.
Third spot went to Max Mittry of Redding. Mittry battled all race to secure the third spot. “My confidence continues to get better with these good finishes lately,” said Mittry. With only three laps remaining, Mittry passed DJ Netto for the third spot. Netto held on for fourth. Dominic Gorden charged from 11th to a fifth-place finish.
Sprint car qualifying was electric tonight. Netto blasted around the quarter mile clay oval speedway and turned a 11.129 second lap. That was fasted recorded lap since 2016 by Rico Abreu.
Justin Sanders picked up the win in heat one. Braiden Chiaramonte grabbed the win during heat two. Becker dominated the third heat race.
What a special night for Jacob Bright. After five years of racing, he picked up his first career win during the Rental Guys Hobby Stock 20 lap main event. Bright earned the win as he held off a hard charging Brian Cooper at the line. Bright shared the moment with the Friday night crowd, and he was very sentimental during the victory lane interview. He received numerous high fives from the young kids in the crowd and a hug from track promoter Colby Copeland.
Second spot was Cooper. Third went to Jared Flower who was fast all night. Flower led the first four laps of the race. Fourth was Toby Merrifield who is always competitive. Robert Warf had a solid night and finished fifth. Speaking of Warf, he won the first eight lap heat race. Zach Lindgren picked up the win during heat race two.
Sometimes you’re just in the right spot at the right time. Todd Cooper held the second spot for most of the 15-lap Sport Modified main event. The leader was Cole Fear who was in command of the event. Fear looked well on his way to the win. Yet, on the 13th lap, Fear’s car got loose and he did a half spin. This allowed Cooper to cruise on by as the white flag was displayed. Cooper led the final lap with ease to get the win. Fear held on to finish second. Jason Clayton Jr. challenged Fear for second and just missed out. Fourth was track legend Phil Marino. The final two spots went to Shawn Smith and Shaun Merritt.
