Sanders Wins Again at Chico
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sanders Back to Victory Lane at Chico
CHICO, Calif. June 6, 2025 – Justin Sanders won his fifth race of the season at Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night. The race was in honor of Bill Brownell and Tommy Herseth. Sanders won this same event back in 2019. Starting from the pole position, Sanders led all 30 laps in convincing style. “After a rough start to the season it’s been nice to pick up my eighth win in 2025 and fifth at Chico,” said Sanders. “It all starts with Demo Mittry, and we are lucky to have a car owner like him.”
Dominic Scelzi moved into the second spot but was never able to capitalize on gaining any ground on Sanders. “He is the best in California without a doubt and to finish second is as good it gets for us at this point,” said Scelzi. The night started off good for Scelzi when he turned the fastest lap in qualifying with a 12.279.
DJ Netto charged up to a third-place finish. “We haven’t been that good lately and wanted to run both nights in Chico to sort somethings out before we head up North,” said Scelzi.
A total of 19 cars attended the special 410 sprint car race.
After over a decade away from racing a 410-sprint car, John Michael Bunch made a triumphal return and placed fourth. He held off a hard charging Tanner Holmes.
Tyler Thompson won the first heat race. It was heartbreak city for Thompson when his top wing brace broke and he had to retire from the main event while running in the third spot. Max Mittry dominated the second heat race. Sanders won the third heat race of the night.
What a memorable night for Shawn Smith. The Sport Mod racer swept the night of racing. He won the eight-lap heat race. Then backed that up with a 15-lap main event win. “It was my first win the Sport Mod,” said Smith. "We had some wins in Hobby Stock, but it feels great to be out front tonight." Chasing him was Tyler Rodgers. The most recent winner in the Sport Mods, Rodgers was all over Smith but couldn’t make the pass. Shaun Merritt finished in third spot. Kyle Pendergrass, Cole Fear, and Jace Wright rounded out the top six.
For the fourth time this season, Brian Cooper won the 20-lap Hobby Stock main event. In fact, Cooper has won all four races this season at Chico. Finishing in the second spot was Jared Flower. Flower overcame a crash from his heat race to finish second. Paul Stephens had a spirited battle with Johnny Hall for third. Stephens held the third spot at the checkered flag. Hall came home in the fourth spot. Shawn Barker came home in the fifth spot. A total of 13 Hobby Stocks registered for the race. After heat races, four cars dropped out, so only none started the main event. Dan Webster won the first heat race. Stephens won the second and final heat race.
