Friday's sprint car winner was awards a $500 bonus on Friday night courtesy of the added sponsorship. Both the Pro and the Pure Stock divisions picked up $200 bonus awards and additional monies totaling $1400 were distributed throughout the top three sprint car positions and the top five positions in each stock car class.

In addition to the racing and fireworks for the holiday, some 100 families of troops currently deployed in the war against terror were present in the grandstands of Placerville Speedway and five local families were recognized for their loved ones who have been lost in the line of duty in a very emotional opening ceremony including the military color guard and Pastor Don Wilson of the Cold Springs Community Church.

Those soldiers recognized included Kyle Dayton, Brad Shooter. Timothy Smith, Matthew Taylor and Michael Elledge. The families of Taylor and Elledge were present for the event.

Once the patriotic ceremonies concluded, a combined total of 84 cars took to the track for their respective events Friday night. In the sprint car division, point leader Colby Wiesz took home his third win of the season and the extra winnings. Wiesz raced in the second place for all but one lap Friday night. Placerville's Andy Gregg took command of the field at the waving of the green flag and appeared to be on his way to victory with Wiesz in tow.

On the final turn of the final lap, Gregg went high in the fourth turn while Wiesz went low. As Gregg traveled up near the front stretch wall he drifted over the cushion of the track and sheered the front stretch wall, sending him into the air as Weisz took the lead with the checkered flag waving. Scott Kinney of Citrus Heights finished in second followed by Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove, Placerville's James Sweeney and Jimmy Trulli. Heat races on Friday were won by Shannon Newton of Elk Grove, Cameron Mendes of Rohnert Park, Gregg and Alissa Geving of Penngrove.

In the Pro Stock division, Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City won his ninth feature event of the season to extend is already healthy point lead. For years Brown has been hoping to post a July 4th victory but hardship has kept him from the winners circle. S

Friday night Brown overcame that annual hard luck streak as he started on the pole of the 15-lap feature event. Forryst Carnett of Placerville shot into the lead at the opening green with Brown in pursuit momentarily before taking the lead. Once in front Brown was challenged by Carnett until mechanical woes parked him off the fourth turn. Tom Arbogast of Auburn challenged Brown all the way to the finish line to finish in second place ahead of Cameron Park's Dennis Ahart, Matt Davis of Citrus Heights, and James Boss of Placerville.

In Pure Stock racing, Tom Tilford captured his sixth win of the year. Tilford started fifth in the race that was led initially by Robbie Kolb of Sacramento. Tilford weaved his way to the front of the field and overtook the lead from Kolb on the eighth lap, a lead he would never relinquish. Tilford was followed across the line by Jason Englund of Citrus Heights, Mike McClure of Nevada City and Rick Grunert of Woodland.

The Nor Cal Dwarf Cars joined the program Friday night, this event saw multiple caution flags and was concluded prior to having just 10 laps complete. Patrick Weger of Grass Valley was the feature winner followed by Brian Quilty, Ryan Winter and Mike Grenert. For complete results of Friday's event log on to www.johnpadjenmotorsports.com
