CHICO, CA (8-27-07) - When veteran World of Outlaw winged sprint
car star Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Indiana returns to Silver Dollar
Speedway on September 6 thru 8 for the Gold Cup Race of Champions he
will be seeking his 13th Gold Cup Championship crown. Kinser, will be
among the nearly one hundred entrants expected for the three day
extravaganza paying out more the $185,000 in posted awards including
$50,000 for the Gold Cup Champion. This 54th annual race will be held at
the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds high banked ¼ mile clay oval which this
year also includes Speed television coverage.
Kinser missed last years race after capturing the 2005 crown. He also
missed in 1989, but otherwise has won 12 of the 29 events held since he
scored his first Gold Cup victory in 1978. He was just a young brash
unknown Indiana sprint car racer when he pocketed $5,000 for his first
win. This is just the second year that $50,000 has be offered to the
race winner, so Kinser has never won the big prize. He has set records
for the most Gold Cup wins, the most World of Outlaw championships, the
most money earned and the most victories scored in Outlaw racing
competition.
This is also one of the most competitive years ever for World of
Outlaw sprint car racing and despite Kinser’s long list of achievements
he is ranked fourth overall in this years championship chase. He trails
North Dakota’s Donny Schatz, Indiana’s Joey Saldana, and Danny Lasoski
of Dover, Missouri.
Schatz and Lasoski are also former Gold Cup winners and current fifth
place driver Oklahoma’s Daryn Pittman is the defending race champion and
the only driver to ever win the $50,000 prize.
The Gold Cup will get underway with the Wednesday night September 5
Feather Falls California Sprint Car Civil War Series, and the Hunt
Magnetos wingless sprints. This two-division show has been the opening
night kickoff for three years now. All seats on Wednesday night will be
general admission on a first come basis.
Leading the roster of off track events will be the 21st Gold Cup Golf
Tournament to be held at Bidwell Park on Friday September 7. A shotgun
start will occur at 8:30 AM. On Friday night after the races the giant
Joe Hunt Magnetos Gold Cup Chili Festival will be held in the
Fairgrounds pavilion. The event is open to everyone and tickets can be
purchased at the door for $6. In addition to all the Chili you can eat
the exciting Miss Gold Cup Bikini contest will highlight the evenings
activities.
