CHICO, CA (9-1-06) - Silver Dollar Speedway will host the first
annual Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprints Invitational on Wednesday,
September 6. The first annual race will feature the top 24 wingless
drivers in the Silver Dollar Speedway season point’s series. This race is
also sponsored by CL Bryant / Feather Falls Casino / Coors Light / Hoosier
Racing Tires. This race will also serve as the final points race of the
year for this division. The main event winner will receive $1,000. The
overall purse is $5250 throughout this one night of racing.
Point leader Bob Newberry of Oakley has already locked up the
championship. In 18 starts, Newberry has three wins and 16 top ten
finishes in 18 starts. He has dominated a competitive series and will be
crowned champion after the races. Paradise teenage driver Justin
Funkhouser is currently second in points. He as amassed two wins and 10
top ten finishes. Grass Valley driver Jay Youngman is currently third.
Youngman is still in search of his first win, but does have a handsome 11
top ten finished in 15 starts. Lathrop’s luminary driver Matt Streeter is
fourth but only holds a four-point lead over Marysville star Jeremy Hawes.
Both of these super-stars of the sport will battle for bragging rights in
the off-season.
Sixth through eighth in points are all tied up. Dave Hays, Don Emery
and Darrell Hanestad each have 258 points. Of the three, Hanestad has
claimed the most victories this season with eight. Taylor Simas, teenager
driver, earned one win this season and sits ninth in the points. Danny
Olmstead also has one win this season and sits in the tenth spot of the
points.
Another winner this season and in the top 24 of the points is Terry
Schank Jr. He drivers the Fontaine/Tiner #2x and is considered one of the
favorites. Marysville driver Charlie Marrs is the pilot of the car
sponsored by the series. The Joe Hunt Magnetos #7 has struggled this
season with motor bugs at Chico. He is looking to finish the year with a
strong showing. Rookie driver Rich Crumley has showed a lot of promise in
just his first season of driving wingless sprints. Teenage driver R.C.
Smith of Biggs is also a kid showing great strides this season at Chico.
With limited experience this former go-kart star is quickly picking up the
non-wing sprint car game. A veteran of winged racing, Sparky Howard of
Santa Rosa, is the final driver eligible for this race by finishing 24th
in the points. He locked up the final spot in this invitational only race.
In what has emerged as a leading force in Motorsports racing, the
wingless division has attracted 91 different drivers this season at Silver
Dollar Speedway. Once again, that is 91 drivers, for a series that is
truly in it’s infancy at Silver Dollar Speedway. Of the 91, those in the
top 24 of points are the best of the best and a who’s who of wingless
sprint racing at Chico.
Pit gate will open at 2 pm on Wednesday. Front gate will open at 5 pm.
First race will start at 7:30 pm. Adult ticket price is $20.00 for the
grandstands. Juniors are $12.00 with children $4.00. This race is general
admission seating. More information can be found at
